As we count down to the dying moments of 2010, the abiding images that one takes away is not of the triumphs and the highs marked by our wonderfully contrarian citizenry in various fields, but our troubling, flawed political class that shock and shame us all. The long arm of the Niira Radia tapes have now entangled one of the city’s MPs, a man hand-picked by his party for a greater role at the centre, someone who has won a vote of confidence from Bengaluru’s cognoscenti, not once but five times. Consecutively. As threats of lawsuits fly around, and the BJP dismisses it as “street gossip,” clearly there’s no shutting off the Radia tap. Or should that be tape? As the principal actors in the 2G scam are made to jump through the hoops – belatedly - will we ever find out who actually leaked the tapes. Or why. Was it corporate turf wars? Political one-upmanship? Deliberate destabilization of governments? Inside job? Or just an accident of fate? ...read more...

Media Conglomerates, Mergers, Concentration of Ownership
Some nations can influence and control their media greatly. In addition, powerful corporations also have enormous influence on mainstream media. In some places major multinational corporations own media stations and outlets. Often, many media institutions survive on advertising fees, which can lead to the media outlet being influenced by various corporate interests. Other times, the ownership interests may affect what is and is not covered. Stories can end up being biased or omitted so as not to offend advertisers or owners. The ability for citizens to make informed decisions is crucial for a free and functioning democracy but now becomes threatened by such concentration in ownership.
The idea of corporate media itself may not be a bad thing, for it can foster healthy competition and provide a check against governments.

Business Times on the year gone by
As we look back on a just ended 2010 from the first days of a new year arrived, it is important to remind ourselves of all that has gone before to be able to make a fresh start and renew the promise of things to come...While 2010 will forever be known to us Sri Lankans as the year that President Mahinda Rajapaksa secured his second term in office, it may also become infamous for being possibly the first time in our local history that an opposition candidate for the presidency has been jailed. And, in so doing, has put any possible political instability centre stage while also earning us condemnation from key members of the world community. Meanwhile, all throughout, a UN Panel on Human Rights convened this year appears to overshadow our every interaction, diplomatic or otherwise, with the global community.
Not only the year that the ruling UPFA won a majority in parliament, 2010 was also when the Executive Presidency ...read more...
